Mission brief: building distributed communication

The mission on September 9–10 is clear: we will design and prototype a distributed communication system for the Rebels. This system must allow one-to-one and group conversations without relying on a central server or service. Messages must pass directly between participants, making manipulation by Maynet impossible.

The goal is simple to state but complex to achieve: create a framework where communication remains intact even if parts of the network fall.

Core requirements

  • Decentralization: No single central server or service may exist. Communication must route directly between participants. If one node falls, others must remain functional.
  • Direct paths: Messages must travel from sender to receiver without passing through a central authority. One-to-one and group communication are both required.
  • Resilience: The system must continue working under disruption. Peer-to-peer discovery, mesh networking, and distributed storage are recommended strategies.
  • Simplicity: The design should avoid unnecessary complexity. Layers create attack surfaces. Keep protocols transparent, auditable, and reproducible.

Non-negotiable restrictions

  • No reliance on corporate infrastructure. Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, or any centralized provider are forbidden.
  • Open source tools must be prioritized. Closed systems invite blind spots.
  • No hidden dependencies on online AI or proprietary APIs.

Suggested approaches

  • Peer-to-peer protocols (e.g. libp2p, Matrix in federated mode, secure mesh solutions).
  • Local-first applications where logs are stored and verified at the edge.
  • Encryption for confidentiality, paired with redundancy for integrity.
  • Small test deployments: one-to-one messages, group relays, confirmation across multiple nodes.

Objective: distributed communication prototype
Mode: direct, peer-to-peer

This mission is about trust. Central systems bend. Distributed ones resist. If we succeed, the result will not be final, but it will be a framework for the future.

On September 9–10, we build silence that cannot be stolen.
